The remodelling of Cenotaph Square in Harrogate forms part of a wider scheme of long term strategy to guide the transformation of Harrogate so that the whole town centre core can be rejuvenated through betterment of its pedestrian connectivity through a well-considered transportation strategy.
DLA Landscape and Urban Design developed an over-arching strategy that provided a concept that orders the improvements and outlines the relative importance of each space, its role and the main objectives for its treatment in the context of a cohesive set of design principles.
Key to this strategy was the remodelling of Cenotaph Square. The 'closing –off' of Parliament Street to vehicular traffic and diverting the bus route/servicing access around the perimeter of the space maximises the potential to create a major new public square for Harrogate with the ability to be a flexible events space.
The proposed new public realm around the Cenotaph and along Parliament Street, when linked to re-routing of traffic around Parliament Street has the potential to generate significant benefits to Harrogate.
