Girnhill

Client: Strata & Wakefield Metropolitan District Council
Location: Featherstone

Girnhill housing estate has been designed to be a safe and attractive sustainable community, with a strong sense of place and identity. As the masterplan developed the landscape layout has responded to an increased focus on active frontages and natural surveillance and the public realm has evolved to provide spaces which are more distinct in character and more encouraging of community ownership and interaction.

The brief required the provision of 270 new homes within a high quality sustainable community, aimed at the regeneration an area of semi-derelict post-war prefabricated housing.

Our strategy aimed to link Featherstone Town Centre with the site and countryside beyond, utilising a 'creative corridor' of public arts events and installations, including the existing celebrated 'Bass Relief', which explores themes of mining, nature and the local community.
