The aim of the competition was to select a design to re-invigorate Scunthorp's Central Park.
DLA's competition entry aimed to combine the park's public and private facilities and create a rich new 'fabric of activity to serve as a destination for local people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.
The park design aimed to provide linkages by developing a network of trails to cater for a quick stroll, a brisk jog or a 6k run. The trails would converge at the heart of the park, which is marked by an elegant wind turbine supplying clean energy to light its facilities by night.
Aside from the wooded parkland areas, there was a lack of habitat to benefit wildlife and grassland management regimes did not promote biodiversity. Several new environments were designed within the park extending its biodiversity and attracting new flora and fauna. The introduction of 2,000 new trees would ensure that the regeneration project achieved a zero carbon footprint.
