Our holistic design approach for Hessle High School has been to create new facilities that integrate the community and teaching wing, the new sports facility and the retention of an existing Listed Building to form the new School Campus. Our proposals for the design of the external areas are combined into a master plan with a hierarchy of spaces that provide a harmonious, calm and inspiring educational environment.

The external layout has adopted a layered approach to its form and structure, working with its grain and natural resources to ensure the new development responds to the underlying landscape and environmental systems. We have provided a solution to allow the school to develop areas of the grounds gradually in the future with participation of Pupils and the local community, for example development of the science garden linked opportunities in the curriculum or enhancement of the sixth form garden to meet their own specific needs.

Our design provides a safe and attractive environment for children and young people, offering a variety of different settings for sports, outdoor teaching, social and recreational activities.

The external spaces provide facilities for physical and non-physical activities to meet pupils' needs. Social spaces have integrated adjacencies to the building allowing supervision of pupils from internal spaces, giving links between indoor and outdoor.

The overall approach appreciates the sites potential in the short and long term to deliver a scheme which enhances the existing character and identity and is highly functional to the school's needs.
